Tell us a little bit about yourself
My name is Suhad, I’m an artist, designer and filmmaker based in San Francisco.
Born in Oman, raised in Amman and been living in the US for almost 13 years.
My childhood views of the world were shaped by moving between Oman and Amman. And my adulthood views of the world are shaped by moving between being a community organizer on the ground in Ferguson to a Creative Director in Silicon Valley. My art is a study of all the layers of identity uncovered in between.
When did you realize you want to become an artist/illustrator/designer?
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t.
If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
Hmm… can reading qualify as a job?
In terms of your craft, which taught you more, school or life?
I tend to think of knowledge in leaner terms. Life definitely teaches one more, but without school and the knowledge acquired at that time period, one wouldn’t be ready for life. I don’t see them in competition, more like a cause-and-effect thing.
The thing that had the most impact on my craft though would be: time.
How do you start working on a project?
I make tea (with mint or sage depending on the season) and start a journey of extensive research. If the right playlist is on, magical things happen.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I don’t know if I can narrow it down to one person. Having lived in many places, and due to working in art for so long, I have had the chance to meet some of the most incredible people alive, they are literally changing the world. But I would say that the person I learn from the most is my 9-year-old daughter, Jeneen.
What’s your favorite pastime?
Staring blankly into the ceiling with nothing to do sounds ideal. Unfortunately, single moms don’t have pastime. It’s more like #PastTimeGoals
Sandwiches. And everything chicken.
My playlist this week is Warda, Narcy, Najat, J. Cole, Queen, Kendrick Lamar, Sanaa Mousa, and Maryam Saleh
Our current human reality.
